The Wind and the Spirit

Today is a windy, warm and sunny day. These are the days that make me love the midwest (and momentarily not wish to move out west). I don’t know what it is about the wind that I love so much. It reminds me of my child hood growing up in Michigan. Running outside and playing for hours. I mean serious playing! Bike riding, jumping rope, tag, made up adventures with my friends and siblings, you name it! If it could be played outside we were playing it!

The wind also reminds me of this verse in the bible:

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

-John 3:8 (ESV)
Jesus tells Nicodemus this after Nicodemus asks Jesus how can a man be born again? Jesus explains that being born of the spirit is like the wind. We cannot explain where it comes from or where it goes but we know it exists. This is how it is for those born of the Spirit. This analogy is beautiful and so deep. The mystery of how God can “make us new creatures” is miraculous to say the least. Jesus also tells Nicodemus not to marvel at what He’s saying. You must simply be born again. Later in the chapter Jesus says what is now one of the most well known scriptures to further explain to Nicodemus what it means to be born again:
John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life…”

I’m not a bible scholar but I believe Jesus was trying to get Nicodemus to focus on the more important thing. Not HOW it works, but THAT it works. If you believe, you will be born again with a new destiny of eternal life.

Simple right? So simple and so hard at the same time. You must believe as a child would. Simple, trusting, and joyfully.

So whenever you feel the wind brush your face or whip your hair, remember this gift He’s given us of salvation, a new life, a new destiny. We don’t have to know HOW it works, but THAT it works, and it’s YOURS…just believe.

God Bless!
