Get that monkey off your shoulder
I will praise the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God.
Psalm 146:2-5 (NIV)
Worry over making the right decisions in life can cause a stand still in your life. It can hang around your neck like an albatross or sit on your shoulder like a nagging monkey constantly infusing your day to day life with thoughts of self-doubt, distrust and the inability to enjoy life. That’s because we’ve put our trust in ourselves concerning the outcome of our decisions, or we’ve put our trust in another fallible human being, or into a wavering system created by fallible humans. I was feeling like this the other day and opened my bible to this passage in the book of Psalm. I realized that I had been trusting in the wrong thing. In myself. God is perfect, just, knows all things and is faithful…unlike everything and everyone else. Peace washed over me as I realized that I had allowed my trust to rest in “princes, and human beings” as the passage refers to. Suddenly the unknown wasn’t as scary because God knows the future and He orchestrates things for our good. Consider today where your trust is. If you feel like smacking a monkey off your shoulder it may be a clue as to where your trust currently lies!
